Two freight trains collide in Mississippi
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Two freight trains collided Tuesday in west Jackson, starting fires around the engines and in a nearby wooded area.
There was no immediate word on injuries or fatalities as ambulances and rescue vehicles crossed a field to reach the wreckage.
Officials were unsure if the trains were hauling hazardous materials. Amy Carruth, spokeswoman for the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, said a hazardous materials team was sent to the scene to check for potential problems.
No homes or businesses were in the immediate area of the collision.
Television news helicopter coverage showed some freight cars derailed behind the engines, but it appeared that many of the cars remained on the tracks.
Black smoke and flames could be seen at the collision point.
